Asparagus

In terms of the development of civilization, I’ve been dabbling in a little agriculture here at my house, but I acquire most of my food through hunting and gathering. When I was a little girl, my paternal grandfather used to take me along as he scoured the countryside for the farm stands with the best produce at the best prices. Much of my childhood ran alongside adults’ conversations about where you could find the first peas of the season or who had a great deal on tomatoes or who was selling the best corn. It may seem early for produce in Western NY, but the growing season has already started, and I got my first fresh asparagus of the season yesterday at Kirby’s Farm Market in Brockport. A lot of people think they don’t like asparagus, but I think that’s mostly because it’s generally not worth eating out-of-season, and its season is very, very short–just a few weeks very early in spring. The asparagus I got yesterday had been cut that morning and kept cold, which is exactly as it should be. The stalks were nice and thin, so I just snapped off the ends and seamed it. Then I tossed it with just a little bit of salt and a pat of butter. Yum, yum, yum. I’ve been itching to go get more today, but instead I’m picking up all the branches and sticks that fell in my yard during yesterday’s rainstorms. There’s always tomorrow….
